The Ultimate Cinematic Sacrifice: Rules vs. Emotion

MediaCulture

How an episode gets made

A thread with four hundred comments has maybe five arguments in it, held with wildly different amounts of support. Sloppod finds those clusters, gives each one a speaker, and weights their airtime by how much of the room actually stood behind them. A thread that went ninety-ten produces an episode that sounds ninety-ten.

  1. You paste a link. A Reddit thread, a Hacker News item, a Lemmy or Mastodon post, a Lobsters story, a Discourse forum topic, a public Facebook post, or an article. Anything in it that is a picture is transcribed, not described.
  2. The thread is weighed. A model reads the whole discussion, finds the positions, and gives each one a persona with its real weight attached. They argue, and a referee checks the airtime against the weights while the model is still on the line.
  3. It lands in your podcast app. Voices, a mix that is measured rather than predicted, and it lands in your podcast app — and, unless you say otherwise, in the feeds for its source and its topic.
